Valle di Baredo (Miniera del Valle di Contra), Primaluna, Valsassina, Lecco, Lombardia, Italia

This mine is also known as Contra Valley Mine.

The new denomination by : I siti mineralogici abbandonati e dismessi delle Alpi e Prealpi Lombarde - Regione Lombardia Bollett. Ufficiale n. 44 29.10.2004

From Primaluna cross the Pioverna torrent (by the Iron bridge),follow the signs to the refuge Riva, along the Baredo Valley.

The entrance of the mine is at 576 meters asl, in the woods.

Mineralized mainly by cadmian sphalerite and galena, the Contra lode outcrops inside the metamorphic rocks near the Primaluna village, Baredo Valley. The lode was object of mining exploration during the 20th century, carried out by the mining society “Camisolo Mines Limited”, with excavation of 70 m and 50 m long tunnels. The gangue is mainly quartz, with accessory siderite, especially in the deeper portion of the ore body. The superficial area of the lode is mineralized mainly by massive cadmian sphalerite, with minor galena and chalcopyrite disseminations. In the oxidation areas of the sphalerite mineralization, greenockite, hydrozincite, hemimorfite and smithsonite are commonly diffused. In the deeper portion, the lode is subdivided in various stockword veinlets, mineralized with galena, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and minor pyrite. The secondary assemblage is characterized by various Pb, Cu and Zn-bearing carbonates and sulphates. Associated to the veinlets of the deep portion of the ore body, mimetite and minor As-bearing vanadinite occur.

NOTE: The condition of the mine is not good - several wooden beams are rotten or unsafe.
