Large quarry east of Portland in Sec 33 & 34 T9N R13E. The quarry initially yielded large blocks for rip rap along Lake Michigan, but now produces stone for many different uses. It exposes primarily Proterozoic quartzite interbedded with meta-conglomerates and shale layers now metamorphosed to andalusite schist. The rock dates from the "Baraboo Interval", and was deposited between 1630 and 1750 Ma. The quartzite is cut by several generations of small igneous intrusions including metamorphosed and unmetamorphosed mafic dikes and granites, including complex pegmatites. One pegmatite has been dated at 1416 Ma. The metamorphism reached amphibolite grade here and likely represents the effects of the Mazatzal Orogeny from 1650-1630 Ma.
