The Victoria mine.

In 1912, the Victoria Mine was already in full operation, extracting around 80 tonnes, and a wash plant was launched in Bossòst. The mine worked between 100 and 150 people, spread between the interior and the outside of the galleries.

From 1923 to 1936, zinc ore was extracted from the Victoria mine by the Société Vieille-Montagne. Production was exported to France via Bossòst (100,000 tonnes of ore with 50% zinc).

In the Civil War (1936-1939), work was stopped. In 1949 the exploitation was restored until 1953, when the drop in zinc prices and the lack of manual labour workers led to the final closure of the mines.

Zn-Pb-Fe-Cu stratiform sedimentary-exhalative deposit in Ordovician schists. The primary mineralisation is highly modified after Hercynian regional metamorphism and tectonics and is in turn cut by some Late-Hercynian granite pegmatite dykes.

The abandoned galleries, buildings, and dumps lie in a densely forested mountainous area. A project to rehabilitate the mine for tourist visits is now being carried out.
