Name(s) in local language(s):
Minas dos Carris, Cabril, Montalegre, Distrito de Vila Real, Portugal
W, Sn and Mo mines. Best Portuguese occurrence of blue gem beryl.
The mining complex commonly known as 'Minas dos Carris' is composed by 3 mining concessions:
- 'Salto do Lobo' for W and Mo, opened on 15/03/1947 and closed on 30/11/1992;
- 'Corga das Negras no. 1' also for W, Mo and Sn. Opened on 20/12/1952 and closed on 30/10/1992;
- 'Lamalonga no. 1' only for W, opened on 24/07/1956 and closed on 30/10/1992.
The mining complex is located near the boundaries of Braga District, but all the concessions belong to Vila Real District.
The majority of the mining infrastructures are located at 'Salto do Lobo', except the washery which is located in 'Lamalonga no. 1'.
The Las Sombras-Carris W-(Mo) mines (Total resources 0.28 Mt @ 0.5–0.9 % WO3) include several 1 to 3 m thick swarms of quartz and K-feldspar veins with a variable width between 5 and 20 cm. Many of the veins have diffuse contacts with the host granodiorite, which is affected by pervasive sodic and potassic (i.e., albite and K-feldspar) metasomatic alteration. The stringers are fracture infillings in dilation crack sites associated with a shear zone. In contrast, the feldspar metasomatism, and the diffuse borders of the veins, suggest a magmatic-hydrothermal environment with early magmatic fluids being exsolved when the granitic body had not fully crystallized and still displaying a semi-ductile behavior.
