The MY batholiths are composed predominantly of biotite, two-mica, and muscovite granites, emplaced as a result of the early Paleozoic Caledonian tectonic thermal event. The Indosinian intrusions that consist of biotite granite, biotite monzogranite, and porphyritic tourmaline-muscovite monzogranite occur mainly as smaller intrusions, dikes, or stocks within the batholiths and their contact zones. The Maoershan and Yuechengling batholiths are separated by the Xinning-Ziyuan (hereafter XZ) fault zone that is partially buried in the Devonian and Cretaceous sedimentary rocks. Both Maoershan and Yuechengling batholiths are considered to be connected at depth based on gravimetric and aeromagnetic data.
With an outcrop area exceeding 3,000 km2, the MY batholith was formed by multi-stage magmatic events, including the Caledonian (443–402.9 Ma) and Indosinian (236–204 Ma) periods. Furthermore, more than 2,000 pegmatite dikes occur within the MY batholith.
