Anne Arundel County is on Maryland's Coastal Plain Province, underlain primarily by undeformed, generally loosely consolidated Cretaceous, Tertiary and Quaternary sediments. Bedrock is rarely exposed, but when it is, it can yield interesting sedimentary materials (such as amber, lignitic coal and vivianite) and fossils. A number of small pits in Cretaceous iron ores (hematite, limonite) and clays were dug in the western part of the County, some dating from Revolutionary War time. Few signs of them can be found at present.
