The exploratory adit was part of the Ciriegia-Mercantour Road Tunnel project that was supposed to connect Cuneo (Italy) and Nice (France). Works started in 1966 and were definitively stopped in 1967, when the progressive advancement of the excavation front reached 2925 m. The excavated materials were dumped along the banks of Gesso della Valletta stream.

Migmatitic gneisses, locally garnet-bearing, were excavated from km 0 to km 1+60; granitic rocks belonging to the so-called "Granito Centrale" body from km 1+60 to the adit end at km 2+925.

From a mineralogical point of view, the most interesting minerals are zeolites, titanite, and fluorite (small violet cubic crystals).
