The exposed rocks in the Capital Reef National Park give a remarkable view of the geological column extending from the Permian (270 million years old) to the Cretaceous (80 million years old.) The exposure of the rocks started about 75 million years ago during the Laramide Orogeny when the compression of tectonic plates caused a dramatic uplift forming a massive monocline fold. The fold occurred at the location of a preexisting deeply buried fault creating the longest exposed monocline in North America. The fold extends for about 90 miles from Thousand Lake Mountain in Utah to Lake Powell in Arizona. The entire fold is included in the Capital Reef National Park.
The name Waterpocket Fold is derived from the fact that erosion has caused potholes to form in the sandstone which collect and preserve rainwater. The potholes called tanks provide life-sustaining water in the desert.
