The complex is covered by up to 120 m of Cenozoic sedimentary rocks, but has been penetrated by c. 500 drill holes up to 1100 m deep. It was intruded metamorphic, igneous and sedimentary rocks of Cadomian to Lower Permian age (Röllig et al. 1990; Seifert et al. 2000). The complex extends over c. 150 km² and consists principally of dikes and 2 pipe-shaped intrusions known as Storkwitz and Serbitz.
