Podiform chromite deposits in variably serpentinised dunite and harzburgite. The chromite mineralisation is almost exclusively confined to the dunitic members which can be traced for more than 300 m along strike. The 235 occurrences which were exploited in this area yielded 32,500 metric tons of ore, representing about 90% of the total Norwegian chromite ore production.

"The Feragen chromium ore field is associated with the large bodies of ultramafic rocks, mainly altered to serpentinites, located to the SE of Røros. The main rock types are variably serpentinized dunite and peridotite (cpx-bearing harzburgite to cpx-poor lherzolite). Cr-ores int the form of chromite are exclusively hosted in the dunite. Typical podiform ores predominate, though semi-stratiform ore bodies are also present. Ore-types include fine-grained impregnations, banded and semimassive/massive (> 55% Cr-oxide) types. Generally the chromite-ores have low PGE values (0.1-0.2 ppm), except the Osthammeren deposit, which has an average grade of 1.5 ppm total PGE. Between 1820 and 1940 27 500 ¿ 32 500 t of chromium ore was produced from mainly three mines (Leigh, Ler and Skal mines)."

The recent additions to the Feragen chromium mines are based upon a map of Nilsson (1979). It is not always possible to separate between the mines he placed upon the map. I started with the Svinet chromium mine, and found on the altitude map a mine south of the track, while his rectangular marker was placed north of the track. The Fanten mines are a group of three rectangles, but my effort to reconstruct them on the relief map, is not convincing me. Therefore, these registration must be taken with a certain reserve. The coordinates will usually have pinpoint precision, but the names might be wrong in a few cases.

There seems to be a problem with the coordinates Nilsson (1979) presents in his work. He uses the UTM32 system according the maps he presents in his work, but in that case the coordinates are way off. I tried UTM 33 and 34 too, but also these give erroneous results. Maybe there is something I am missing, since I am not used to the UTM system. In the upper-right corner of the relief map at hoydedata.no appears the UTM coordinates, so it is supposed to be easy to find a location based upon UTM coordinates. However, Nilsson's coordinates do not correspond with the actual location.

I did my best to register the mines east of Gjetsjøen (Geitsjøen) to the best of my abilities, but I must admit this has been a formidable challenge, and I am unsure that I succeeded. Råbekkgruben, Atterglöyma, Trilotten, Pudsoren and unnamed mines, must all be double-checked.
