Ancient iron and manganese mines, working hydrothermal limonite-baryte veins in Triassic sandstones (Buntsandstein). Outcrops and relics of old workings are located at different places around Neuenbürg and Waldrennach, about 10-12 km SW of Pforzheim.
The veins show a NW-SE strike, are vertical and show widths between 0 and 4 m. Some of the ore is brecciated.
Iron smelting dates back to Celtic times.
