Following the reorganisation of 1996, the three Unitary Authorities of Merthyr Tydfil, Bridgend and Rhondda Cynon Taff were formed from the administrative county of Mid Glamorgan.

Mid Glamorgan was itself only formed during the 1974 and was previously part of the traditional county of Glamorgan, which dates back to the middle ages, but it also incorporated a very small part of the traditional county of Breconshire.

Mineral specimens from locations within this section may therefore be labelled as coming from Merthyr Tydfil, Mid Glamorgan or Glamorgan depending upon the time they were collected.

Locations now within Merthyr Tydfil, but that was previously part of Breconshire are listed within that section.
