Bornholm is a Danish island covering 589.16 km², located in the Baltic Sea about 160 km east of Copenhagen and approximately 37 km south of the Swedish coast. Administratively, the entire island is governed by Bornholm Regional Municipality (Bornholms Regionskommune), which combines both municipal and regional responsibilities. Despite its modest size, Bornholm occupies a geographically and culturally distinctive position within Denmark, shaped by its relative isolation and long maritime history.
From a geological perspective, Bornholm is exceptional within Denmark and exposes the country’s most complete record of deep geological time. The island is underlain predominantly by Precambrian crystalline basement rocks, including granites and gneisses, which form the rugged northern coast and represent some of the oldest rocks in northern Europe. These basement rocks are overlain in the south by a well-preserved sequence of Palaeozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary cover, including Cambrian sandstones and shales, Carboniferous coal-bearing strata, and Jurassic to Cretaceous sandstones, clays, and limestones. This compact but diverse succession makes Bornholm a key reference area for Danish and Baltic geology.
Bornholm is also of particular interest for its Jurassic amber, preserved within Mesozoic sediments and representing one of the few documented occurrences of amber of this age in northern Europe. These deposits have been studied for their palaeobotanical and palaeoenvironmental significance, providing insights into Jurassic forest ecosystems and resin-producing vegetation. The presence of Jurassic amber on Bornholm has been documented in classic studies such as Langenheim (1969) and Larsson (1978) and remains an important feature of the island’s geological and mineralogical heritage.
