Gamle Frederiks Stenbrud, Bornholm, Region Hovedstaden, Danmark
A quarry that was famous for its Feldspar-rich sandstone known as "Nexø Sandstone". Mining started in 1754 where it was the biggest quarry on Bornholm and provided stone for many buildings, e.g. in Copenhagen (Copenhagen University, the Natural History Museum etc.). The quarry was active until 1957.
Just north of the quarry is a dyke that marks the border between the Svaneke Granite and the Nexø Sandstone. In this dyke Andreas Birch, who was Royal Mineral Inspector from 1753-1758, discovered a Copper-bearing vein up to 1.5 meters thick. In 1818 the discovery was further inspected by physicist Hans Christian Ørsted, who had a shaft build. In the shaft he found that Copper and Chalcopyrite occurred more frequently the deeper one got into the underground.
