Katanga Copper Crescent; Zaïre
The Mashitu Group, which is situated in the western part of the Katanga Copperbelt ~50 km east of Kolwezi, includes four deposits: Mashitu Principal, Mashitu Northwest, Safwe North and Mashitu South (Mashitu Sud). Mashitu Principal is a basin-like shape with its eastern and western margins dipping at ~20° towards the center, where the ore-bearing rocks flatten out. Mashitu Northwest comprises polylithic and monomictic breccias developed within the Red R.A.T. (Roches Argileuses Talqueuses-R1) Subgroup, which are host to high-grade supergene Cu-Co mineralization. The Safwe North deposit comprises breccias and blocks of brecciated Red R.A.T. argillites underlain by a block of well bedded C.M.N. (Calcaire á Minerai Noir) unit. Both breccias and the block host high-grade, Cu and Co oxide mineralization.
