Kenosha County is underlain by Silurian sedimentary rocks, primarily dolostones. A diamond-bearing lamprophyre intrusion was discovered during drilling under Kenosha, but has so far proven uneconomic to develop. Thick glacial sediments obscure the bedrock in most places. Kenosha has a public museum with excellent geology displays, included a reconstructed wooly mammoth skeleton. Beach combing along Lake Michigan's shore can provide interesting samples of local and glacially transported rocks.
