The Butugychag deposit is the site of a now abandoned "gulag" forced labor camp. The workings are reached by climbing the "great staircase," a set of stairs built by gulag labor that ascends the mountain from the valley bottom to the deposit on the summit ridge. Mining was accomplished mainly by hand, mostly on the surface in a series of pits and trenches. A large excavation is present with stopes in its headwall. Ore was loaded into cars & pushed from the summit by inclined road to a cable tram. From there it was again transported by hand (wheelbarrow) or truck to a mill about 8 km (5 miles) down the valley towards the highway.


Operations for tin were begun in 1938. From 1948 mining of U ores was begun. In 1954 mining operations were finished.
