Prince Georges County is part of the Coastal Plain Province in Maryland, and is underlain by generally unconsolidated Cretaceous to Tertiary sediments consisting of gravels, sand, silt and clay. The Cretaceous rocks are generally continental, while the Tertiary rocks mostly shallow marine sands and marls. These rocks are unconformably capped by younger alluvium and upland gravels of Pliocene to Recent age. Iron ore and clay for bricks were produced as far back as the early 1700's from the Cretaceous rocks. Interesting specimens of iron oxides can come from the exposures of these rocks. Iron phosphates were verified from one locality near Greenbelt. Fossils such as petrified wood and dinosaur bones can be found in these rocks. The Tertiary rocks can contain gypsum crystal clusters, and, in at least one place (Wheeler Road), good nodules of vivianite. The Tertiary rocks are also richly fossiliferous. The urban to suburban character of much of the County means that collecting exposures and opportunities are ephemeral.
