Named in honor of Eugene N. Cameron (10 August 1910, in Atlanta, Georgia, USA - 21 April 1999, Madison, Wisconsin, USA), professor at the University of Wisconsin, USA who first recognized it. Early in his career he worked for the U.S. Geological Survey. He was an expert on pegmatites and studied lunar samples.
