Other/historical names associated with this locality:
Okeltor Works
On the north bank of the River Tamar, first worked in about 1848.
Merged with Cotehele Consols about 1 1/2 miles to the west in 1882, the amalgamation was short lived and the company was wound up. Working on a reduced scale continued at Okel Tor until 1887.
ref: Mines and Miners of Cornwall XV - A K Hamilton Jenkin (1969)
The site is easily accessible along the riverside road from Calstock. The road then turns into the Tamar Valley Trail which climbs up the hillside above the site close to Engine Shaft. Though this gives a partial view of the stack etc at engine shaft, the buildings are largely obscured by trees.
A footpath turns off the trail through the main mine site and drops down steps at the far end to the river bank. This ends at a marshy area which was the settling ponds and now shows evidence of mine drainage presumably indicating the presence of a blocked adit.
Most of the site is however fenced and private.
The name 'Okeltor Works' appears on both the 1881 and 1905 6 inch to the mile Ordnance Survey maps, with the suffix 'tin, copper and arsenic'.
