The Berere pegmatite field covers a area about 100 km2 located250km N of Antananarivo. About 150 lenses and veins of pegmatite is found in the area.
The pegmatites which is situated west of the small town Tsaratanana are in general embedded in migmatites and pyroxene-amphibolites. Exploitation started here in the early 1950s. From 1951-1954 beryl was exploited. From 1959 columbite-tantalite was mined here. In july 1960 55 tons of Columbite was extracted from this area (Besaire 1966).
The area has been abandoned since 1960.
