Name:
Named after the first recorded locality, the Befanamo pegmatite, Madagascar.
A variety of thortveitite with a higher content of scandium and zirconium and a lower content of yttrium.

First discovered in 1918, in the eluvials of the Befanamo pegmatite, Madagascar by the prospector J. B. Rasamoel. The sample was a 10 x 3 cm fragment of a larger crystal group. He sent the sample together with other specimens from Befanamo for identification to the French mineralogist Alfred Lacroix who recognized it's similarity with thortveitite described in 1911 from Norway. A chemical analysis done by G. Urbain showed this to be a thortveitite with a higher content of scandium (Sc) and zirconium (Zr) and a lower content of yttrium (Y) than the Norwegian thortveitite. Lacroix considered it as a variety of thortveitite and named it as befanamite.
