Cava San Pietro (Oratorio di San Pietro), Mergozzo, Val d'Ossola, Provincia del Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, Piemonte, Italia
Small old quarry of erratic boulders to the north of San Pietro Oratory, Nibbio village.
The quarry exploited for road embankments a large deposit of erratic boulders, mainly composed of amphibolite, gabbro, and pegmatites.
Besides zircon, black bacillary crystals of tourmaline and icositetrahedral crystal of garnet, up to 1 cm across, have been found in pegmatites. Minerals of metamorphosed mafic rocks include: pyrrhotite, pyrite, chalcocite, chalcopyrite, hematite, ilmenite, magnetite, calcite, malachite, azurite, chrysocolla, microcline, albite, hornblende, garnet, epidote, biotite, titanite, apatite, and scolecite.
