New Diggings was settled in 1824 by prospectors looking for lead ore. It "boomed" in the 1840's and again in the early 1900's. Numerous old mines in the Sec 23, 24, 25, 26 T1N R1E were worked for lead and zinc in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Most of the mine sites are difficult to find now, although some scattered rock piles still exist (2015).
