SEDEX style lead-zinc-polymetallic deposit, occurring in Middle to Upper Devonian and Lower Carboniferous carbonate and argillaceous carbonate formations.

Fankou is the largest Pb-Zn producer in Asia, with reserves of 3.4 Mt of Zn and 1.7 Mt of Pb. By-products are copper, tungsten, tin, silver, gold, antimony, mercury, uranium, bismuth, thallium and molybdenum.

The Fankou Zn-Pb deposit is located in the central NMB and comprises three major ore districts, that is, the Jinxingling, Shiling, and Shilingnan, from north to south. The three ore districts account for 90 % of the Zn + Pb metal reserves, making them as the focal points of extraction in the Fankou. Other three sub-economic ore belts, including the Yuandunling, Fuwu, and Tieshiling are distributed in the periphery of the main ore body. A total of approximately 211 ore bodies present a complexity of geometries including multiple layered, lenticular, stratiform, and wedge-shaped. Along a three-order thrusting fault system, all the orebodies are bounded by the corresponding strata of the Middle Devonian Donggangling and the Upper Devonian Tianziling. The Zn-Pb orebodies exhibit a complexity of geometries, and the previous researchers defined the distribution pattern as “melon vine leaves” or “small flags hanging on flagpoles”. Notably, the orebodies proximal to faults display thicker layers and higher grades, but the orebodies distal to faults become thinner along the stratigraphic bedding. On the contrary, in the NNE-striking B-B' section, the orebodies are presented as multiple lenticular and layered geometries along the sub-horizontal stratigraphic layers.
