The deposit has been in operation since the 1980's and has a predicted resources at 30 million metric tons (Mt), with an average copper grade of 0.62 %. The Chuankeng deposit is situated within strata predominantly comprising the Lower Triassic Tieshikou Formation and the Middle Triassic Yangjia Formation. The Tieshikou Formation is characterized by a composite assemblage of silty mudstones, shales, siltstones, and limestones. The Yangjia Formation consists of sandstones, mudstones and siltstones. Notably, the Tieshikou Formation underwent hornfel alteration and skarn alteration processes, representing the primary ore-bearing host rocks within the Chuankeng deposit.
The ore-forming process of the Chuankeng skarn copper deposit could be divided into three stages. The initial, or pre-ore, phase corresponds to the prograde stage, which is characterized by abundant skarn minerals including garnet, pyroxene, and minor wollastonite, and magnetite. The succeeding, or syn-ore, phase equates to the retrograde stage, constituting the principal
mineralization period of the deposit. The terminal, or post-ore stage is demarcated by the carbonate phase, featuring an abundance of calcite veins. These carbonate veins cut through the previously formed skarn minerals and sulfides.
