A large quarry in mafic rocks of the Baltimore Gabbro Complex.
It is situated on land formerly owned by the Rouse Company of Columbia. The land surrounding the quarry has been developed into a gated community and is now owned by the Stone Lake Community Association.
The quarry is about 1500 feet wide and is flooded with rainwater. In a Baltimore Sun article published in 1995, A representative for the Rouse Company stated "In some areas, the water -- which is rising as much as 5 feet a year -- is more than 300 feet deep."
A 400 Acre quarry, owned by Savage Stone LLC, which is located in Jessup, Maryland. It was opened in 2004 and the rock is used exclusively for road base. The stone goes to highway projects within a 60 mile radius of the quarry.
