Several granite quarries, now covered over, operated just east of the city. Pegmatite dike swarms are known in the area. In 1860, a 45-pound smoky quartz crystal (the "Mitchell crystal") was reportedly dug up with many others found in float from a farm west of town (Nagy, 2017).
