Taconic "brown iron ore" or "limonite" deposits, generally found at the contact between the Stockbridge formation marbles and the overlying Walloosac formation schists and schistose marbles. They probably represent a laterite soil that has been reworked by metamorphic processes involving the marbles beneath. At places the deposits "penetrate" into the marbles as largely siderite masses and veins. Includes mines in Stockbride, West Stockbridge, Richmond, Pittsfield, Lenox, Cheshire, North Adams and Williamstown.
