Iron meteorite, Ni-rich ataxite (IVB).
This meteorite is the largest intact meteorite in the world. It is thought to have arrived less than 80,000 years ago. It was found in 1920 after a farmer's plow hit it. It is located 25 km northeast of the town of Otavi and is a tourist attraction, seen by thousands of visitors a year.
The original weight of the meteorite, which has not been moved from where it was found, was thought to be about 66 tonnes. Vandalism and scientific sampling have reduced that to about 60 tonnes today. It was declared a national monument in 1955 in an attempt to reduce vandalism.
