The anthracitiferous basin of La Thuile is located on the orographic right of the Dora of Verney and outcrops from Petit Saint-Bernard Pass to the west as far as to the San Carlo Pass to the east. It mainly consists of graphitic schists with minor intercalations of coarse metaconglomerates ("Zone Houillère" unit, Briançonnais terrane). The dark grey, fine-grained, homogeneous graphitic schists contain coal matter in varying quantity. The amount of the organic portion can increase to the point that the rock becomes constituted almost exclusively of coal matter. It forms numerous lenses of limited extension and thickness, interbedded in the graphitic schists. The anthracite has a typically granular structure. It is constituted of very fine grains with rounded edge. The graphitic schists are mainly constituted by quartz, albite, white mica (phengite), chlorite, pyrophyllite, graphite, carbonate and chloritoid. In accessory quantity are present: apatite, rutile, zircon, and ilmenite.

The anthracitiferous basin of La Thuile was object of intense industrial exploitation in the period between the two world wars (Clerici & Clerici, 1980). The mining operations definitely ceased in 1966.
