Ordinary chondrite (L6; S4)
Find, 1933; 30 kg

In 1934 Nininger recovered 4 stones which he believed to be pieces of the Melrose (a) meteorite, but which were later determined to be pieces of a separate fall. Inspections reveal chondrules and chondrule fragments within a severely shocked meteorite whose primary silicates were still largely equilibrated matrix. Compositionally, equilibrated forsteritic olivine and low Ca-orthopyroxene ('hypersthene') are characteristic of the L-chondrite chemical group. Mineralogically, the meteorite consists primarily of olivine accompanied by orthopyroxene along with minor plagioclase, troilite and Fe-Ni metal. Accessory chromite, ilmenite, and minor sulfides are also reported. Goethite in silicate features is one of several obvious terrestrial weatherates. Pentlandite and magnetite, which are preterrestrial in origin in some ordinary chondrites, were also deemed by Ramdohr (1973) to be primarily due to terrestrial weathering.

The largest mass (~1.5kg) has been kept at the University of New Mexico with a smaller mass at Arizona State University in Tempe (454.9 g in 2017).
