El Doctor is a town in the Mexican state of Querétaro.

It was founded in 1722 with the donation of land made by Viceroy Don Juan de Acuña, Marquis of Casa Fuerte to some militiamen from Cadereyta, in gratitude for their participation in the pacification of the Sierra Gorda. The origin of the name is uncertain.

El Doctor soon gained importance when abundant mines were found on its land, and it was renamed Real de Minas del Doctor. Of special importance was the mine called "San Juan Nepomuceno", discovered in 1728. Due to the relevance that it acquired at this time, the congregations of San Juan Tetla, Maconí, and Ahuacatlán de Guadalupe were subject to its jurisdiction, which began as missions. Permission to build the chapel was obtained in 1769. The following year, in 1770, the chapel of San Antonio was elevated to a parish.

The town was attacked by military insurgents led by the brothers Juan and Felipe Vende in 1810.

New buildings were built in the independent era, and in 1889 a fire forced the reconstruction of the church, with the replacement of the perishable roof with a zinc one.

Today it remains a tourist town, whose interest more than itself is in its surroundings, where people practice mountain tourism. It is located on a hill, with an empty slope to the north and an even higher hill to the south. The town itself is cold, and is surrounded by coniferous forests and mountain ranges.
