A scheelite mine, the ore is present in quartz veins in the Hasst Schist. With placer gold prospecting already going on in the area, scheelite was discovered in a quartz "reef" in 1884 by William Raines, C. C. Boyes and Simon Wilson. George Wilson formed the Wakatipu Scheelite Company in the 1880s. In 1906 came the Glenorchy Scheelite Mining Syndicate. With increased demand in WWII, the state took over the mine in 1942 (renamed the State Mine), but gave up after the war. It was then worked on a "tribute" (leased for percentage of profit) basis into the 1970s. Up to 1942 the mine had produced 862 tons of scheelite concentrate.

There are many smaller mines further up the slopes of Mt Judah and adjacent Mt McIntosh (see site photos for district map). The small mill (battery) just down the hill is preserved. It and the mines are on New Zealand Department of Conservation land, they are easily reached from Glenorchy on the Mt Judah Track. The DOC has erected informative signs at the trailhead, the battery, and mine site.
