Name(s) in local language(s):
Tinzener Ochsenalp (Alp da Bovs; Colm da Bovs; Cuolm da Bovs), Tinizong (Tinzen), Oberhalbstein (Surses; Sursass), Albulatal, Graubünden (Grisons; Grischun), Schweiz (Suisse; Svizzera)
A former iron and copper mine, first records from 1338, operated into the 19th century and then closed down, mainly because the owners did not have the necessary expertise.
Located 5.4 km SE of Tinizong (Tinzen) at N46.56244 E9.68018, elev. 2480 m, (Swiss grid 771851 159250), mine dumps and ruins are still visible. A second operation was at a lower elevaton of approx. 2180m.
The workings comprised 4 adits, all caved-in or covered by gangue-material of the later operations, therefore the portals could not be located anymore.
While the earliest written records show mining activities in this valley already in 1338, archeological research on the copper-slag found shows that the first copper mining in this area was done in prehistoric times, approx. 1200 - 600 B.C.
A furnace was located near Demat (at approx. N46.57768 E9.65200; 769643 160882 ) and vitriol was produced at Cruschetta ( at N46.58191 E9.63953; 768675 161325). Later the ore was shipped to the furnace in Salouf (earlier called Salux), built in 1828 known as “Eisenwerk am Stein“.
