Independence of 1776 Mine; 1776 Mine; Seventy Six Mine; '76 Mine
The '76 Mine was the first mine staked in Monte Cristo on July 4, 1889. The mine was officially called the Independence of 1776 Mine, but the miners quickly started calling it the '76. The outcrops of galena and arsenopyrite above the mine were what first drew prospectors to Monte Cristo, since they made the side of Hubbard Peak shine in the sunlight. Some gold was produced from the mine, but it also had high assays of lead. Surface outcrops averaged around 1 oz of gold per ton and 26% lead, although these surface deposits were quickly stripped away by miners. The deposits did not not extend very far into the mountain, which caused the '76 to be one of the first mines in Monte Cristo to close. From the several years of operation less than 1000' of drift was driven on 2 levels. The ore minerals were mainly galena, chalcopyrite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, and sphalerite.
