Iron Mask Mine; Iron Master Mine
A copper mine located just west of the summit of the central part of Palmer Mountain. It worked a series of overlapping tabular lenses along the contact between siliceous limestone and greenstone. Development includes a 300' shaft with drifting a 100' levels totaling about 1,900'. It produced ore prior to 1911 and in 1918-1919.
Note: This is a separate mine from the Copper World.
Structure: Hanging Wall Part Of Fault
Alteration: See Comments
Commodity: Production of an unknown quanity prior to 1911; production in 1918-1919. There could be considerable resources between the 200 and 300 ft levels and even belo W 300 ft if the ore could be traced. Total size of claims about 160 acres.
Deposit: A fine-grained mass of an intergrown natural sulphide matte, which is found in a series of o erlapping tabular masses; the larger lenses measure several hundred tons of ore each. 11 patented claims: homestake, caylor, iron mask, three links, rainy day, 20th century, columbus, anaconda, and lottie. Mine maps at wash. Dmg.
Development: Shaft and drifts; 5000 ft riblet aerial tramway, capacity of 400 tons/day, completed in 1919; exploration in 1967-1968.
Geology: Near the ore the wall rock is badly metamorphosed by intense shearing action that has developed serpentine and talc and in places converted the rock directly into a schist. This altered andesite often occurs As a horse two to five ft thick separating two overlapping parallel lenses of ore. ; geol.desc: series of overlapping tabular lenses of solid pyrite and chalcopyrite
Rock formation(s): Palmer Mtn Greenstone
