Note: The McGown Mine symbol is placed in Sequin Township, not Foley Township
History:
1894: T. McGown - 100 foot open cut and adit.
1897 - 1908: Parry Sound Copper Mining Co. Ltd. - 3 shafts, development, mining and milling.
1951-59: Kalbrook Mining Co.
1959: R. M. Clarke Mining Co. Ltd.
Geology:
Quartz veins with disseminated sulphides. Gold was found in chalcocite-bornite stringers in gneiss. The country rock is a medium grained hornblende or biotite-hornblende gneiss with a layering that strikes N75°W and dips 70°SW. The gneiss is cut by quartz veins and thin veins of granite pegmatite and aplite.
Around the turn of the century the most interesting deposit was the McGown Mine near Parry Sound. "The existence of mineral in the district of Parry Sound was first noted in 1894, when a farmer named McGown discovered traces of free gold on his land situated about two miles out of town. Sufficient quantities of this precious metal were secured to enable a local jeweller to hammer a few souvenir finger rings, and the owner of the property felt justified in forming a company to exploit for gold" (The Canadian Mining Review, 1900).
