Ref.: New York State Museum Bulletin No. 199, Alling, Harold L. (July, 1917), The Adirondack Graphite Deposits: Fig. 1, 8, 12, 43-52. A graphite mine located 5 miles West of Lake George in Graphite,a town named after the deposit and mine. Owned by the American Graphite Co.. Ore is in a graphitic quartz schist. Workings were 200 to 150 feet deep & ¼ mile (.4 km) on slope. The "Summer Pit" was started about 1890 and was named such since it was only operated in the summer months. It was 600 feet long but shallow.
