The German Speidel Family started the zinc mining in Thasos. They did build their installations in the period 1902-en 1914.
At the beginning of the war they were kicked out. (because they were German).
SaHMM / Vieille Montagne in Thasos 1926-1930
In 1925, G. Bogeret, from Liège / Belgium, acquired the 13 concessions for the extraction and processing of zinc, lead, silver, iron and copper ores for 40 years on behalf of the Belgian mining company Vieille Montagne. The SaHMM (Société Anonyme Hellénique Métallurgique et Minière) was established. The Speidel installations were rebuilt, the calcining modernized, five steel Wälzöfen from the Krupp company were erected in Limenaria and supplied with ores from the abandoned mines and halde material of the Speidels. The operation was stopped in 1933 probably due to problems with the enrichment and processing of the ore and the fall in zinc prices. Around that time most VM-mines did shut down.
The merchant Georgos Apostolopoulos from Kavala took over the 25% shares in SaHMM from VM in 1934 without resuming operations.
So it was only a short period that VM was active there. It limited itself to refreshing, modernising, the old Speidel installations.
The later start-up attempts after 1934 were also by SaHMM, but then VM had already sold its shares to the businessman George Apostolopoulos from Kavala.
