A former Au occurrence/mine located in secs. 8, 9, 16 & 17, T4S, R17E, MDM, 2.2 km (7,300 feet) SSE of Bagby and 2.9 km (9,500 feet) N of Bear Valley, W of Rocky Gulch on highway 49. Owned and operated by the Pacific Mining Co. Property now on standby with proposal to mine 3 ore bodies via surface open cuts. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 to 1,000 meters. Related nearby properties owned by the same firm are the Queen Specimen Mine, Chicken Gulch Mine and the Succedo Mine.
This mine complex also includes, in about 5-1/3 square miles belonging to the Pacific Mining Co., the French Mine, Evans and Queen Specimen mines. The ore minerals are chiefly pyrite, arsenopyrite, native gold, with minor chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, nickeline and millerite. Copper is the only other mineral recovered other than gold or silver. Erythrite and danaite, both containing Co, have been found but presumably are rare and well-disseminated and no attempt has been made to recover Ni or Co. Gersddorffite has been reported as occurring with garnierite in the Pine Tree workings (CJM&G: 37(3): 491).
Mineralization is a quartz gold vein deposit along the Mother Lode. The ore body strikes N15W and dips 70E at a width of 120 meters and a length of 1,200 meters. It is disseminated and tabular. Primary ore control was faulting. There is an en echelon arrangement of the veins. Local rocks include Jurassic marine rocks, unit 1 (Western Sierra Nevada and Western Klamath Mountains) and/or ultramafic rocks, chiefly Mesozoic, unit 2 (Western Sierra Nevada and Klamath Mountains).
Workings include underground openings, which, on the Josephine totaled about 7,700 feet. Workings in the Pine Tree operation aggregate over 8 miles in length.
Production information: There has been much roast Au production, also Cu, Ag & Pb.
Reserve-Resource information: Unknown reserves.
Up to 1.35% Ni in concentrates; no assay for Co.
Copper production has been less than 1,000,000 pounds.
Reserves and resources: Estimate year: 1993: demonstrated - 8,662,707 metric tons of ore. Au = an average of 2.230 grams/metric ton.
