Lüderich: a lead-zinc mine from the Vieille-Montagne group.
Archaeological evidence shows the deposit was already worked by the Romans.
Since the 18th century, there was a mining industry in Lüderich.
On August 20, 1852, the mine was taken over by “Société Anonyme de la Prusse-Rhénane, Saint Paul de Sinçay & Cie. (Rhein-Preußische AG)”, a daughter of the “Société Anonyme des Mines et Fonderies de Zinc de la Vieille Montagne”.
A year later, a merger between the two of them followed and the department “Bensberg-Untereschbach der Vieille Montagne” with its headquarters in Immekeppel was established. The Lüderich concession amounted to 17.7 Mio. m³.

From 1853 to 1978, zinc and lead ore were extracted interruptedly in Lüderich.
About 10 million tons of raw ore was extracted, good for about 1 million tons of lead and zinc metal (half of these after the second world war).
At the end of the 1920s, the first “Rührwerks Flotation of Humboldt” was built, which was only replaced in 1970 by a more modern flotation.
During the years of the Third Reich (1937-1945), there was a great demand for metals. At that time, the mine employed from 900 to 1,200 workers. In "normal" years, this would have been around 500.
The annual production of blende was on average about 10,000 tons.
Around 1950, with the high metal prices as a result of the Korean War, the mine experienced golden times.
From 1975 numerous test drillings were done, but due to a number of political complications and legal trials, a number of building applications and permits were rejected.
In 1977 the production of blende fell from 20,795 tons to 14,968 tons for zinc blende (Bleiglanz/galena production fell from 5,170 tons to 3,695 tons). Stocks were ending.
In combination with the decline of the dollar and the declining yield, it was decided to close the mine.
On 31 October 1978, the Lüderich mine closed after 126 years.
Located near Altenbrück, 3.5 km SE of Bensberg and about 4.5 km WNW of Overath.
