Preservation Inlet is one of the most remote parts of New Zealand, at the very south-west corner of the South Island. There are no roads, and the only human habitation is the Kisbee Lodge, which provides accommodation. The site needs to be accessed by helicopter. Occasional cruises visit the inlet from Milford Sound.
The inlet is a fiord, surrounded by mountains, waterfalls, and thick temperate rainforest. It is cold, and rains much of the year.
Several hundred miners braved the elements in the 1890's when alluvial gold was discovered. Four major quartz lode mines were subsequently opened in the late 1890's, but all had closed within a few years.
