Mine La Motte is likely the oldest mine in Missouri. Its discovery is credited to Antoine de la Mothe-Cadillac (who, in 1701, had founded Fort Pontchartrain du Détroit, which later became the city of Detroit, and who was the French governor of Louisiana between 1710 and 1716). He happened to be visiting Fort de Chartre in 1714. While there, he went on an exploratory expedition and discovered lead at the place which is now Mine La Motte.
The mine was public property in 1738-40.
In 1763, it was worked by members of the Valles family and in 1800 J.B Pratte, St. Gemme Beauvois and J.B. Valle purchased the mine from the Valles, to whom the Spanish government had granted it.
The grant was confirmed in 1827 by the U.S. government and sold in 1838 to C.C. Valle, L.F. Linn and E.E. Pratte who leased the land to miners in tracts of 40 acres. The entire tract contained 24,000 acres.
Since then, the mine has changed hands many times.

Owned by the National Lead & St. Joseph Lead Companies.
Ore is mineralized Bonneterre Dolomite.
According to the Missouri DNR, the mine closed in 1959.
