Dales Gorge is a location in the Hamersley Range, near Wittenoom, however the Dales Gorge Member, or Dales Gorge Iron Formation, is more often referred to in the literature and this refers to a widespread and economically important geological formation in the area.
Mineral occurrences have been previously listed against the Dales Gorge Member, after some published references, eg. Miyano, T. and Klein, C. (1983), but these Mindat entries have been moved to Wittenoom (http://www.mindat.org/loc-264569.html), as a best guess location.
This member lies within the Hamersley Iron Province (http://www.mindat.org/loc-187883.html), in the Brockman Iron Formation. The upper layer of this is the Joffre Member of banded iron formations with minor thin shale interbeds; under this the Whaleback Shale Member; under this the Dales Gorge Member consisting of 17 banded iron formations and 16 shale macro bands; and lastly under this the Marra Mamba Iron Formation.
Riebeckite is abundant in the Dale Gorge Member, and probably in the Dales Gorge itself.
Mindat co-ordinates show the tourist site within the gorge including the campground, pools and waterfalls.
Please note asbestos (and related fibrous material possibly including crocidolite and riebeckite) is very dangerous to health and should be avoided.
