An iron mine opened in 1926 by the Mineral Mining Co., and operated through 1929. In 1941 the mine was re-opened by the M. A. Hanna Co. with addition of the Aronson and Minckler properties, and operated as part of the Homer-Wauseca Group through 1969. A total of 14.8 million tons of ore are credited to the Wauseca Mine (shipments from the James (Osana) Mine during 1911 - 1922 have been mistakenly assigned to the Wauseca Mine in the literature.)

Three shafts with ten levels were developed to 1510 feet depth. Workings grew to connect with those of the Homer Mine to the west. The three shafts are known as the the Minckler Shaft, in NW-SE; the Wauseca Shaft, in SW-NE; and the Homer-Wauseca Shaft, in SE-SW.

The Wauseca Mine is the type locality for the Wauseca Pyritic member of the Dunn Creek Slate. This pyrite- and graphite-rich black slate signals the bottom end of the iron-formation throughout the region. It oxidizes rapidly when exposed to air, so that stored drill cores of it turn to dust. It had been known to catch fire when exposed in mine workings, and its dust was damaging to miners' lungs.
