Carnkie Mine
North Wheal Basset was amalgamated around 1878 with Wheal Basset under the name of the latter. According to Embrey and Symes (citing Bluett 1899), North Wheal Basset was discovered by an old woman who alerted miners that she had seen a Jack o'Lantern light. Digging at the site of the sighting, the miners quickly exposed extremely rich secondary copper ores. The woman received a monthly payment, a new dress each year, and Grace's shaft was named after her.
The North Wheal Bassett produced over 30,000 tons of copper ore between 1846 and 1869.
The sett is covered with huge mine buildings, especially the one where the shaking tables and buddles are located. Worth a visit when you like ancient Cornish mine scenes.
