Name:
Named in honor of Otto Fuetterer (born ca. 1880, Germany; died ca. 1970, USA) who is largely responsible for the development of the mining claims on Otto Mountain, the type locality. The mountain is also named after Mr Fuetterer.
Elemental combination is rather unique, only slightly resembling that in quetzalcoatlite.

The structure is based on double spangolite-type sheets; the sheets are composed of two types of octahedra: CuO5Cl (typically with Jahn-Teller distortions) and TeO6. These sheets alternate with other type of double layers comprising PbO2Cl6 polyhedra, that have lopsided distribution of bond lengths (lone-pair effect).
