Named in 1994 by Joel D. Grice, Blair Gartrell, Robert A. Gault and Jerry van Velthuizen in honor of Ernest (Ernie) Henry Nickel (31 August 1925, Louth, Ontario, Canada - 18 July 2009), Canadian-Australian mineralogist, Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET), Ottawa (1953-1971), Division of Mineralogy, CSIRO, Wembley, Western Australia (1971-1985), for his outstanding contributions to research on the mineralogy and genesis of economic mineral deposits in Canada and Australia, and to his dedication to the formalization of mineral systematics. His work included the Nickel–Strunz mineral classification system.
