A former gold mining town / historic site. Produced 21.46 t of gold.
The Hill End mineral system, 43 km northeast of Orange and 40 km north of the highway, is the best-documented orogenic gold system within the Hill End Trough. The Hill End mineralisation is hosted by the Late Silurian Chesleigh Group and overlying Early Devonian Cookman Formation. It extends for over 17 km from the Chambers Creek mines in the south to the Dirt Hole mine in the north. Within this is an 8 km zone that hosts the majority of significant hard-rock mines at Hill End. From south to north this zone includes Hawkins Hill, Sargents Hill, Golden Gully, Red Hill and Valentine areas. Gold production at Hill End exceeded 21.46 t of gold of which 12 t of gold came from mines in the Hawkins Hill area.
The town is famous for the Beyers and Holtermann specimen otherwise known as the Holtermann nugget. While not a true nugget, it is the largest specimen of gold ever found with it being approximately 286 kg of quartz reef that produced 93 kg of gold. It was found at the Star of Hope mine in 1872.
